We thought we recognized Kurt’s killer plaid coat. We had no idea how right we were.
So much has changed in the past 30 years. And if you’re someone who finds all that change—the screens, the endless choices, “athleisure”—a touch depressing, Kurt Russell is here to remind you that you have some say in the pace of things, too. Russell is still madly in love with Goldie Hawn, for example, and still holding hands with her as the snow falls down around them.
Story time: Way back in 1989, Kurt and Goldie went on a date to Le Cirque in New York City. By some miracle, Le Cirque is still open to this day—still serving martinis to people on dates and rocking the carpet and heavy draped vibe of the ’70s. On that date—30 years ago—Russell wore a big plaid coat with a brown shearling collar.
Kurt knows that a good coat is worth keeping. We know he knows this because while shopping for Christmas gifts in Aspen this week, he took it out of storage and looked all kinds of wonderful. We knew the 66-year-old dressed like a baller in his cozy ski town, but this is a next-level flex. Do you own an article of clothing that’s 28 years old? Does it have fur that qualifies as a millennial? We didn’t think so. (If you do, our heartiest congratulations.)
Between the holidays and the end-of-year sales, chances are you’re up to your elbows in brand-new swag. Which is great: New stuff is the best. But what if one of those things is a thing you don’t drop-kick into a landfill as soon as the new smell wears off? What if one of those things is a thing you wear in a cozy ski town in the year 2045 while buying gifts for the literal love of your life? That’s the whole reason you spend time thinking about and buying cool stuff. So this winter, make like Kurt Russell and grab something you’ll want to wear as a much older—but no less cool—man.
